The short answer

Each coin weighs about 13.28 grams and is 80% silver, so it holds about 10.6 grams of pure silver. That is about a third of a troy ounce.

Roughly three coins hold about one troy ounce of silver, which is why these coins are usually sold by metal content rather than face value.

How to tell it apart

Look for a round coin dated 1966 with the Australian coat of arms on the back. The 12-sided 50 cent coin that replaced it from 1969 contains no silver.
